Remove metadata from video

A phone video can carry the place it was shot, the device that shot it, the software that edited it and the exact capture time. Docfy reads that QuickTime metadata, shows you what it found, then removes it in your browser — without re-encoding the video.

    What's inside a video

MP4 and MOV store the video stream next to a tree of boxes. Some of those boxes describe the media itself; others are metadata — the same kind of hidden receipt a photo carries, often with a location and a capture time attached.

    Where it was shot

QuickTime location tags such as ©xyz, often a precise latitude and longitude.

    What shot it

Camera make and model, plus device details written by the phone or camera.

    When it happened

Movie and track header timestamps, enough to place a clip on a timeline.

    How it was edited

Software and encoder names, title, artist and comment fields.

    What actually changes

The tool replaces metadata boxes with free space of the same size. The file length and every byte offset stay the same, so the video and audio streams are untouched.

    Why in-place matters

Most online converters re-encode the video to strip metadata, which costs time, quality and battery. Docfy edits the container directly: it finds the metadata boxes and replaces them with free space, leaving the compressed stream exactly as it was. The output has the same size and the same picture quality.

The cleaned file is parsed again before download. If any field survived, the tool reports a failure instead of handing it to you silently.

    Limits

    • MP4 and MOV only. WebM, MKV and unusual containers are rejected rather than half-cleaned.
    • QuickTime metadata only. C2PA / Content Credentials manifests are detected but not stripped yet. Read the C2PA guide before removing provenance deliberately.
    • Unusual layouts may hide fields. Metadata can live in vendor-specific boxes; the card lists what this parser found. Verify the output in your player before uploading anything important.
    • Browser memory is the limit. 200 MB per video, 6 videos per batch; the file is held in memory twice while cleaning.

    Questions people ask

Are my videos uploaded to a server?

No. Reading, cleaning and downloading all happen in this tab. Open DevTools → Network and confirm there are no upload requests. Closing the tab discards the file.

Does it re-encode or reduce quality?

No. The tool replaces metadata boxes with free space inside the existing MP4/MOV container. The video and audio streams are not decoded or re-encoded, so the output has the same size and the same quality.

    Which metadata is removed?

QuickTime user data such as GPS/location (©xyz), camera make and model, software/encoder, capture date, title, artist and comments, plus movie and track header timestamps. Standard EXIF, XMP and C2PA manifests are part of separate containers and are not stripped by this version.

    Which video formats are supported?

MP4 and MOV files that use the ISO base media file format. Unsupported or corrupted files are rejected with a message instead of being silently skipped.

Will the cleaned video still play on my phone?

It should: the tool only replaces optional metadata boxes with free space and leaves the streams and chunk offsets unchanged. Test the output in your player before uploading it anywhere important.

Does it remove C2PA / Content Credentials?

Not yet. If a C2PA manifest appears present, the tool says so, but it removes QuickTime metadata only. Removing provenance is a deliberate choice; read our C2PA guide before you do it.

How many videos can I clean at once?

Up to 6 videos per batch, 200 MB each. The limit is browser memory. Cleaned files download one at a time.
