Remove AI metadata from photos

Images can carry a record of how they were made: a C2PA / Content Credentials manifest, XMP AI tags, or software names in EXIF. This tool scans those markers and removes the metadata containers — losslessly, in your browser, without re-encoding the pixels.

    What counts as AI metadata

"AI metadata" is not one thing. Several different containers can say something about how an image was generated or edited — and they are all removable bytes, not visible pixels.

    C2PA / Content Credentials

A signed manifest that can name the tool, the signer and the edit actions. It lives in a JUMBF container inside the file.

    XMP AI properties

Fields such as digitalSourceType and trainedAlgorithmicMedia describe how content was produced.

    EXIF software fields

Tool names, artist fields and comments written by an editor or generator.

    Platform labels

An "AI" badge on a social network is stored by the platform, not in the file. This tool cannot change it.

    What actually changes

The cleaner edits the container: it drops metadata segments/chunks and copies the compressed image data untouched. No canvas, no re-encode, no quality loss.

    What this does not remove

    • Platform AI labels. A badge on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram or X is a platform decision; it is not in the file.
    • Pixel watermarks and SynthID. Invisible watermarks are embedded in the image data or a proprietary layer; stripping metadata does not remove them.
    • C2PA in video. The video remover strips QuickTime metadata and detects, but does not strip, C2PA manifests yet.
    • Other formats. JPEG, PNG and WebP only. HEIC/AVIF must be exported first.

    When not to use this

This tool exists for files you own or have the right to edit: cleaning a personal photo before posting, or removing your own account name and location. It is not a tool for passing AI-generated work off as human-made, for evading a platform's AI disclosure rules, or for removing provenance from someone else's file.

Removing a C2PA manifest can also remove evidence that would support you later. If the image has provenance obligations, check the rules that apply before cleaning it. Read the C2PA / Content Credentials guide for what a manifest proves and what it does not; this page is not legal advice.

    How the lossless clean works

    Scan the containers

Docfy looks for C2PA/JUMBF markers, XMP AI properties, EXIF software fields and GPS, then lists what it found.

    Remove only metadata

JPEG: drops APP1/APP11/APP13/COM segments. PNG: drops eXIf/text/C2PA chunks. WebP: drops EXIF/XMP/C2PA chunks. Image data stays byte-for-byte.

    Verify the output

The cleaned file is scanned again and decoded to confirm the dimensions did not change. If anything survived, the file is marked as failed.

    Questions people ask

What counts as AI metadata in an image?

A C2PA / Content Credentials manifest, XMP properties such as digitalSourceType and trainedAlgorithmicMedia, and EXIF software or artist fields written by an AI tool. Platform labels such as an AI badge on a social network are not stored in the file and are not affected by this tool.

Does this remove platform AI labels or pixel watermarks?

No. Platform labels live on the platform, and invisible watermarks like SynthID are embedded in the pixels or in a proprietary layer. This tool removes file metadata containers only; it does not remove labels, watermarks, or detection signals.

    Does it re-encode the image?

No. It removes metadata segments and chunks from the existing JPEG, PNG or WebP container and copies the image data untouched. The pixels and dimensions stay exactly the same.

Can I remove C2PA from a video too?

Not with this tool. The video remover strips QuickTime metadata from MP4/MOV and currently detects, but does not strip, C2PA manifests. This page covers still images only.

Is it legal to remove AI metadata?

Removing metadata from a file you own is often legitimate, for example to protect your privacy. Using it to disguise AI-generated content, evade platform rules or mislead people can violate laws, contracts or platform policies. This page is not legal advice; if the file has provenance obligations, ask a lawyer.

Will the cleaned photo still open and look the same?

Yes. The tool decodes the cleaned file before download to confirm it is a valid image with the same dimensions. Only metadata containers are removed, so the visible pixels are unchanged.

Does this remove EXIF GPS as well?

Yes, for JPEG, PNG and WebP the metadata segments that carry EXIF, GPS, XMP and C2PA are removed together. If you only want the general photo cleaner, the remove-image-metadata tool does a re-encoded clean; this page is the lossless option focused on AI and provenance fields.
